I had practiced athletics and played basketball for years and was sure I was ready and quite knowledgeable\u2026 I had already competed in a lot of shows, riding many different horses. I had jumped large tracks with important opponents such as the legendary D\u2019Inzeo brothers, Mancinelli, Oppes, Giulia Serventi, Capuzzo and many other officers\u2026<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>Well, I thought I was well on my way! The result?<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>One of the very first times he saw me on a horse, Mangilli told me I didn\u2019t know how to trot!! He said I looked like a beginner!! He made me push down my heels, releasing my ankles and calves; he taught me to feel my own body and be in touch with the horse\u2019s flanks with my heels and calves. He obliged me to think of myself as part of the horse, begging me to never use strength or muscles to obtain full compliance. He explained that horses can sense and understand even the smallest movement we make expressing our intentions, that they always wait for our signals just like great sporting companions\u2026<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>Well, I started to understand something about riding!<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21-1024x686.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21-1024x686.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21-768x514.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21-1536x1029.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21-730x489.png 730w, https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21-655x439.png 655w, https:\/\/www.cavalliecavalieri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Schermata-2022-08-24-alle-20.00.21.png 1780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>Then came grid work; tests to see whether or not we had understood; jumps at a trot and with our hands on our hips, small jumps taken at a walk (an exercise I later saw De Nemethy use with American champion riders Kusner, Steinkraus, Morris, etc.). Hours on horseback without a saddle.<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p> In the end I understood that one rides with an ever-active mind and not with our muscles. <\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>I had understood that so as to win one had to be fast, the fastest! <\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>And I understood that so as to be fast one must never be hard on the horse\u2019s mouth, because every interference is a waste of those few one hundredths of a second that make all the difference between winning and losing.<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>Furthermore, there are times at which on every show jumping or cross- country course one needs to take action, not to pull back, but to provide energy, courage, to help while making an effort and in deciding how to address a difficulty. So as to \u2018use our legs\u2019 we instinctively sit back in the saddle and start to apply pressure raising our heels, as if trying to grab our stirrups and agitate our legs and often also our hands: it is our legacy at work! What are we telling the horse with these gestures? <\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>So as to \u2018use our legs\u2019 we instinctively sit back in the saddle and start to apply pressure raising our heels, as if trying to grab our stirrups and agitate our legs and often also our hands: it is our legacy at work! What are we telling the horse with these gestures? <\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>\u2018Come on, you go ahead and then I\u2019ll follow\u2026\u2019<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>The correct way to \u2018use one\u2019s legs\u2019 is another; we must move our pelvis further forward (and hence the barycentre too), also moving closer to the saddle\u2019s pommel; lower even more our knees and heels, activating our heels to touch the horse with a \u2018forward to back\u2019 movement without raising them. At the same time we must not move our hands, keeping contact with the horse\u2019s mouth and continuing to move in the direction we have chosen. <\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>The correct way to \u2018use one\u2019s legs\u2019 is another; we must move our pelvis further forward (and hence the barycentre too), also moving closer to the saddle\u2019s pommel; lower even more our knees and heels, activating our heels to touch the horse with a \u2018forward to back\u2019 movement without raising them. It tells the horse: \u2018We have a problem, but I\u2019ll go ahead, over the jump; come and follow me!\u2019<\/p><div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div><p>As you see there is a huge difference!
